and saw not: and to hear what thingsyou hear, and heard not.
NOTE: (2010-11-28) - 9:51-56 - How different the spirit of James and John prior to Pentecost - and then following! They were rightly nick-named by Jesus - “Sons of Thunder.” Imagine the beloved disciple John - who leaned upon Jesus' breast, and whom Jesus loved in a special way - yet wanting to do what Elisha did in the OT, cursing the young people who mocked him, and bringing the deathly judgment by two she-bears! Isthere a difference between OT and NT times? Most certainly. Still today there are believers who have missed Jesus' rebuke to James and John - and who stillwant to act like OT disciples!
9:57-62- And whatis Jesus' standard of discipleship? Far strongerthan most believers today understand! Jesus did notcommission us to make converts - but disciples! True, conversion precedes discipleship, but the latter is the rule of Jesus in the Great Commission of Matthew 28:18-20! Does one haveto be a disciple? No - it is entirely a matter of personal choice. There is alwaysan “If” preceding the challenge of discipleship. See Mark 8:34 - “Ifany would come after me (in discipleship), let him deny himself, and take up his :cross, and follow me.” Discipleship absolutely requires that we give up allrights to living our own life. “Others may, You, a disciple, cannot! And there is only one Cross - our identification with Jesus on His Cross - buried with Him in the baptismal waters of death to self! And then see Jesus' life and walk in the Gospels - and to let Him - by His indwelling Spirit - then live out His life through us (Galatians 2:20). Thisis discipleship - and - many are called to it - but fewchosen! That is, few choose to accept the “If” of discipleship, and completely identify with Jesus. Oswald Chambers did! Rees Howells did! George Muller did! George Whitefield did! Mother Basilea Schlink did! - plus many others. Yet - in proportion to the number of converts - not that many - especially in America with the temptation of pleasures, love of money, and the cares of this world. Theychoke out the Word - and make Christ within us become unfruitful! We need to hear again and truly perceive the legitimate claim - “My Utmostfor His Highest!- Thatwill do it!
10:1-24- The Seventy Jesus sent out in a similar manner to the twelve - rejoiced that “demons” obeyed them! Not so, Jesus said. That may be spectacular and awe-inspiring - but from God's point of view - to have one's name written in the Lamb's Book of Life in heaven - has far greatermerit! Jesus rejoiced that His Heavenly Father chose “babes” like His 12 and 70 to proclaim the riches of heaven - and notthe wise and prudent! Where does that put you and me? Hopefully with the 12 and 70 - with George Muller, Oswald Chambers and Rees Howells - for theyhad a child-like spirit and nature. J.A.W.
